Diamond Shopping

Did you know that if you were shopping for diamond that weighed .50 carats you would have 2,783 different quality combination to choose from?

There are 23 Color Grade choices, 11 Clarity Grade choices and 11 Cut Grade choices to choose from!

The prices for those diamonds would range from $400 to $7000!!!

You would think that once you have chosen the diamond’s “Carat Weight”, “Color”, “Clarity” and “Cut” you should be able to price shop that diamond.

Sorry, unless you follow the three simple instructions below, you will not be able to compare diamond prices at all!

You will be at the mercy of the Jeweler and not have a clue to what you are purchasing.

The first is so important that the Federal Trade Commission requires Jewelers to do it.

“Identify the Grading System”

There are many different grading systems used to describe a diamond’s clarity, color and cut.

Many of these systems copy or use charts or graphs that look similar to each other, but seldom do they mean the same thing.

A Clarity Grade of “SI-1” in one system does not mean the same as a Clarity Grade of “SI-1” in another system.

A Color Grade “H” in one system does not mean the same thing as Color Grade “H” in another system.

“Ideal Cut” in one system does not mean the same thing as “Ideal Cut” in another system.

That is why the Federal Trade Commission requires Jewelers to identify which grading system they are using.

Refer to The Federal Trade Commission’s “Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals, and Pewter Industries”.

23.1 Deception (general)

So be very careful and make sure the Jeweler follows the Federal Trade Commission Guideline that requires Jewelers to identify which grading system they are using.

Why do jewelers use the charts that look so similar but mean different things???

Same reasons that you speed and cheat on your taxes!

Second
Use the grading system that is the industry standard.

“G.I.A.”
&
“A.G.S.”
