Carat Weight
|
Carat Weight is one of the four “C”s that determine a diamond’s value.
Diamonds are weighed; the unit of weight is called a carat.
A carat is equal to 200 milligrams.
It is divided into 100 points; just like a dollar is divided into 100 cents.
Many think that “Carat” determines the diamond’s size.
It does not!
Carat determines the diamond’s weight; as with people, there are fat diamonds and skinny diamonds.
It is very common to purchase a diamond that weighs 1 carat but has the diameter or look of a ¾ carat diamond.
This may be why the jeweler is selling you that diamond at such a bargain price!
“Carat” & “Cut” determines the diamond’s size. Properly proportioned diamonds would have the
following carat weight to millimeter diameter:

Diamonds that are fat will have smaller diameters. Nickname: “Cheaters”
Diamonds that are skinny will have larger diameters. Nickname: “Fisheye”
Diamonds that are properly proportioned will have the proper weight to diameter ratio. Nickname: “Beautiful”.
For more information see “Cut”.
Total Carat Weight is the weight of all the diamonds or stones in a piece of jewelry. This can be very deceiving!
For example: a piece of jewelry that contained 100 diamonds having a total weight of 1 carat might be valued at $1500.00.
However, if you had one diamond of the same quality and weight, it would be valued at $10,000.00.
Be careful, Total Carat Weight can be very misleading. You need the weight of each individual diamond to determine their true value.
Total Weight is useless in determining Value or Price!
It is also misleading to give the diamond’s weight as a fraction, such as ½ carat.
When a Jeweler gives the weight of a diamond as a fraction, they are talking about a diamond that weighs somewhere around that fraction.
For example: A ½ carat diamond will generally weigh from .45 carats to .58 carats.
This generalization of weight can cause major variations in the price of the diamonds in the ½ carat range.
It is also against the guidelines of the Federal Trade Commission to describe a diamond’s weight as a fraction.
The Federal Trade Commission requires the weight of a diamond be stated as a decimal part of a carat. Other weights would need further description.
The Carat Weight of a diamond is determined by using a very sensitive and specialized scale.
Once a diamond has been set into apiece of jewelry, that diamond can longer be accurately weighed.
Appraisals!!! It is possible to do a mathematical calculation of approximate weight but generally they just guess!
